Due to the dangerous heat wave hitting our area and a delicate HVAC system, we must CLOSE the Heritage Discovery Center/Johnstown Children’s Museum today (Sunday, June 22) through Wednesday. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through this problem in the short- and long-term.

Due to an interior water leak on 1/23/25 caused by extreme cold, the Johnstown Flood Museum ONLY is temporarily closed. Thankfully, nothing of historic significance was affected. The water remediation team concluded their work, which leaves repainting, floor refinishing, and replacement of carpet and soundproofing materials. We are currently waiting for insurance adjustors and approval of quotes, a process we cannot control. In the meantime, we apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience as we work to remediate and repair our beloved flagship museum.

In the meantime, we are pleased to present Relic Tales of the Johnstown Floods at the Heritage Discovery Center, which is unaffected and operating normal business hours. This new temporary exhibition includes more than 200 artifacts and photographs, many of which have never been on display before, from the Johnstown flood of 1889 (as well as 1936 and 1977).  Welcome!

Johnstown Train Station Arts & Crafts Expo to be held Sat., Sept. 29, 2018

The first annual Johnstown Train Station Arts and Crafts Expo will be held at the Johnstown Train Station on Sat., Sept. 29 from noon-8:00 pm. The event, which will feature 12 indoor arts and crafts vendors as well as additional vendors outside, is intended to spotlight ongoing work at the train station while supporting further upgrades.

Currently, four Greyhound buses and two Amtrak trains depart and arrive at the station daily. Vinzeal Wolf of ETAL Transfer Authority is working to bring four shuttle buses to and from Pittsburgh daily, and has been instrumental in putting together Saturday’s event.

“Those are all opportunities for someone to come to Johnstown for the first time ever, and you never get a second chance to make a first impression,” Wolf explained. “We want to put our best foot forward and let visitors know that we care about our city and we value how people feel about Johnstown.”

Over the summer, Wolf worked with the Goodwill Youth Build program under the direction of Josh Beck and team leader Will Harris to clean and paint the station. The group also hauled away construction debris remaining from the recent roof replacement, a project arranged by JAHA, which owns the building. Other recent renovations include new paving, new sidewalks, and new restrooms.

Food vendors will be available, and there will be a basket raffle drawing held at 4:00 pm.
