Due to an interior water leak on 1/23/25 caused by the recent extreme cold, the Johnstown Flood Museum ONLY is temporarily closed. Thankfully, nothing of historic significance was affected. As of 2/4, the water remediation team has concluded their work, which leaves repainting, floor refinishing, and replacement of carpet and soundproofing materials. We are currently waiting for insurance adjustors, a process we cannot control. In the meantime, we apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience as we work to remediate and repair our beloved flagship museum.

In the meantime, we are pleased to present Relic Tales of the Johnstown Floods at the Heritage Discovery Center, which is unaffected and operating normal business hours. This new temporary exhibition includes more than 200 artifacts and photographs, many of which have never been on display before, from the Johnstown flood of 1889 (as well as 1936 and 1977).  Welcome!

Our full-day rail tours are back by popular demand! For the Ultimate Rail Fan’s Tour, we’ll board Amtrak’s eastbound Pennsylvanian (#42) at the historic Johnstown Train Station and passing along the world-famous Horseshoe Curve as we enjoy the beauty of early spring on the way to Altoona. We’ll get on a bus with our expert docent, Brian Lehman, who will lead your tour through the Horseshoe Curve and the Railroaders Memorial Museum, where Brian will share his expertise on all things rail-related in detail. At the end of the day you’ll board the westbound Pennsylvanian (#43) back to Johnstown. Midday we will be stopping at Cracker Barrel for lunch (each guest pays on their own; lunch is not included in the ticket).

Your tour guide, Brian Lehman, has 37 years of railroad experience starting with Conrail, having worked up from trackman to track foreman, and then Track Supervisor with Norfolk Southern. He worked from the Pittsburgh area to Harrisburg and Harrisburg to Buffalo. He’ll share his deep knowledge on all aspects of rail history and equipment as he leads you through the two railroad sites. (Note: the Horseshoe Curve incline is currently unavailable.)

Tickets are $120 for non-members, $115 for members; you must buy your ticket in advance! Meet at 8:30 am at the Johnstown Train Station.
