Due to an interior water leak on 1/23/25 caused by the recent extreme cold, the Johnstown Flood Museum ONLY is temporarily closed. Thankfully, nothing of historic significance was affected. As of 2/4, the water remediation team has concluded their work, and we are moving on to repainting, floor refinishing, and replacement of carpet and soundproofing materials. We fully expect to reopen by early spring. In the meantime, we apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience as we work to remediate and repair our beloved flagship museum.

The Heritage Discovery Center/Johnstown Children’s Museum is unaffected and operating normal business hours. Welcome!

The Path of the Flood Historic Races

The 11th running of the Path of the Flood Historic Races is May 24, 2025!

REGISTRATION FOR THE 2025 RACES OPENS ON BLACK FRIDAY 2024!

2025 will welcome the Path of the Flood Historic Races for their 11th running. Once again, the 14 Mile course will start within the ruins of the South Fork Dam and sweep runners along the South Fork Little Conemaugh River through the aptly named town. These first two miles emulate the tremendous pulse and power of the historic flood waters as they began their flow towards Johnstown.

Continuing along the path to the National Park Service’s Staple Bend Tunnel site, the start for the 8 Mile race, 14M and 8M runners will experience running through the luminary-lit Staple Bend Tunnel itself, the first railroad tunnel in the United States. A number of shady miles on the Coy-McCombie Link trail will carry participants through Franklin Boro, East Conemaugh and on to the Trolley Line Extension from East Conemaugh to Woodvale Heights. This refined trail has allowed us to obtain some shade but does not come without a price! The Trolley Line gives everyone an opportunity to take in a view of Johnstown that few ever see with a little climb before descending into The Heights of Woodvale and the continuing shade of Plum Street, passing through the Hope Tunnel and back onto the road for the final flow to the finish at Peoples Natural Gas Park, where you can see the historic Stone Bridge, still standing after stopping the majority of the flood’s energy.

All three distances will have timing mats with chip timing. This event is hosted by the Johnstown Area Heritage Association and the Cambria County Conservation & Recreation Authority – all proceeds benefit the Cambria County Trails and the heritage of the Johnstown region.

Registration is free for youth 17 years of age & under for all three races, thanks to 1889 Foundation.
