Due to an interior water leak on 1/23/25 caused by the recent extreme cold, the Johnstown Flood Museum ONLY is temporarily closed. Thankfully, nothing of historic significance was affected. As of 2/4, the water remediation team has concluded their work, which leaves repainting, floor refinishing, and replacement of carpet and soundproofing materials. We are currently waiting for insurance adjustors, a process we cannot control. In the meantime, we apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience as we work to remediate and repair our beloved flagship museum.

In the meantime, we are pleased to present Relic Tales of the Johnstown Floods at the Heritage Discovery Center, which is unaffected and operating normal business hours. This new temporary exhibition includes more than 200 artifacts and photographs, many of which have never been on display before, from the Johnstown flood of 1889 (as well as 1936 and 1977).  Welcome!

The Museum Campaign

The Johnstown Flood Museum Project Campaign is going on now.

The Johnstown Area Heritage Association (JAHA) is working on renovating and refurbishing the Johnstown Flood Museum, Johnstown’s flagship tourist attraction.

The Johnstown Flood Museum has hosted over a million visitors since it reopened in 1989 following an extensive renovation. The film commissioned for the museum won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject, and historian David McCullough called the museum “one of the best regional history museums in the country.” However, long-term exhibitions and building systems are now more than 30 years old and are showing their age, and a complete renovation is necessary.

We are well on our way — in late 2023 we completed renovations and repairs to the exterior of the building, including roof, gutters, brickwork, windows, and doors. We will soon move inside to renovate, repair, or replace building systems like HVAC, the elevator, restrooms, lighting and more.

David McCullough has generously lent his support to the project, as seen in the video below.
